Someone recently asked about the hill at Măgura Zamfirei, south-west of Călinești in Teleorman county, Romania: is it a neolithic tell, a burial mound, or just a terraced vineyard slope? The three look alike from a car window and nothing alike underneath, so it is worth a straight answer.
The record. Romania's Lista Monumentelor Istorice (2015) lists the site as "Așezarea de tip tell de la Călinești, punct Măgura Zamfirei" — monument code TR-I-s-B-14192, CodRan 152369.02, Eneolithic, Gumelnița culture, at the edge of the Tinoasa forest. A tell is a settlement mound: mud-brick houses rebuilt on the same spot for generations until the debris raises a broad, flat-topped hill. It is not a burial mound.
Coordinates, for anyone checking from above: 44.07306 N, 25.22028 E.
The ground. Satellite imagery at that point shows a single flat-topped oval knoll standing alone in open field, contour plough-lines running in rings around its slopes, no vine or orchard rows, no trees on the mound itself, the dense Tinoasa forest close by, and a small meandering stream just to the southeast. That is a mound with the land ploughed around it — not a terraced slope, and not a small domed barrow.
Tell vs tumulus vs terrace, quickly. - A tell is stratified settlement debris: broad, flat-topped, raised by repeated occupation. - A tumulus is a burial mound: low, domed, small in footprint, raised in one episode. The knoll here is far too broad and flat for that. - A terrace is cut-and-fill on a slope, with an uphill cut bank and a downhill fill edge. The rings here follow the mound's own contours — ploughing around a mound, not terracing one.
What I cannot tell you. Shape and a heritage listing do not prove what is inside the hill; that needs coring or a small sondage. So: the designation is unambiguous, the ground agrees with it, and the layers underneath are still an open question.
